  • Title: Potential of Exosomal miRNAs in Early Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer

Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent and deadliest human malignancies worldwide. Due to its long asymptomatic course, CRC is often diagnosed in an advanced stage, when its effective treatment is not possible. Periodic colonoscopy does not provide detailed diagnosis, so many new and less invasive diagnostic tools are urgently required. Recent research revealed, that some serum-derived micro-RNA particles (miRNAs)  appear in the early stage of CRC, what makes them candidates for new biomarkers in its early detection.

Many of them circulate in serum’s small extracellular vesicles, called exosomes, that participate in cellular communication. These miRNAs have significant influence on tumor’s development, progression and metastasis. This miRNA-based liquid biopsy has a great potential to become an accurate non-invasive alternative to colonoscopy. Exosomal-based liquid biopsies give a huge possibility for early cancer detection and successful treatment at its early stage.
