Abstract

Background: This study aimed to investigate the association between the atherogenic index of plasma(AIP) and memory-related disorders (MDs) in Chinese adults.

Methods: Data were sourced from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a current, nationally representative prospective cohort study in progress. The AIP was defined as the logarithm of the triglyceride (TG)-to- high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio at baseline from 2011 to 2012. MDs were assessed through self-reporting questions in 2018. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to evaluate the association.

Results: During a follow-up of 63166 person-years, a total of 240 incident MDs events occurred. The highest tertile of the AIP was significantly associated with an increased risk of MDs compared with the lowest tertile (HR: 1.57; 95% CI: 1.11-2.23; P-trend=0.095) after multivariate adjustments. Finally, subgroup analysis showed that sex, age, education, BMI, and smoking status did not significantly affect the association.

Conclusion: A high AIP was associated with an increased risk of MDs. Our study suggests that monitoring longitudinal AIP trajectories could facilitate early detection and prevention of MDs in the elderly population
